Autumn heatwave

September 30, 2011  |  Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne, People  |  10 Comments

It was forecast to be 25 degrees in Newcastle yesterday. (Centigrade, not Farenheit, for any Americans out there.) I think it was probably that at least. I was boiling hot. I don’t think it’s been that hot all this year before today. I took J for a walk down to Jesmond Dene in the late afternoon. It-was-beautiful. Although pushing the pram back up the hill was pretty hard.

Some more pictures from today on flickr.

I’ve decided to do the next quiz starting on Monday – get your thinking caps out and ready!

Quayside Seaside #2

September 29, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne, River Tyne  |  3 Comments

Sorry for anyone who was expecting Wednesday’s pic to be Quayside Seaside #2 – I got slightly confused about the date and it seemed a shame not to post yesterday’s pic on the relevant day!

This is the ‘sandpit’ – unfortunately after the volleyball net and deckchairs had been taken away. I actually walked past last week and completely missed the whole thing. Probably says something they don’t really want to hear about the whole thing……

28th September 1849

September 28, 2011  |  Central Station, Newcastle upon Tyne  |  2 Comments

Today (it’s still before midnight, shut up!!!!) is the 162nd anniversary… of Queen Victoria opening the High Level Bridge.

These plaques, however, are in Central Station. I’m not quite sure what’s going on there! I found some discussion of it on SkyscraperCity here but it doesn’t seem to come to any actual conclusion.

Two more pics on flickr.

Quayside seaside #1

September 27, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne, River Tyne  |  4 Comments

I managed to miss this Quayside Seaside business until the very end – I was down on the Quayside yesterday and they were taking away the trees :( – but I’m still torn between thinking the idea is genuis and completely insane. ‘Come for the famous Geordie welcome, stay for the tropical climate!!!’ ?????!? Who the hell came up with that one?!

Another pic tomorrow….

Oh and I’m gutted to report that Sunday was the last day for the Grey Street Garden too :(

The Sage

September 26, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne, River Tyne  |  5 Comments

D (the hubby) said this was ‘the’ shot of the Sage (with a hint of disdain!) when I was trying to decide which pic to use – but I do like to use the obvious shot, once in a while! But for those of you who’d rather see something more interesting you can click back to one of these shots:

Two picture Sunday – Grey Street Garden

September 25, 2011  |  Grainger Town, Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne  |  5 Comments

I managed to miss Grey Street Garden for a long time as I was a bit busy round the time it was put in(!).

I’m so glad I’ve got to take some pics while it’s still there! Does anyone know how long it’s staying? I’m kind of hoping it’s going to be a permanent thing.

Jazz Cafe

September 24, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne, Pubs, Bars and Hotels  |  14 Comments

When I was a student at Newcastle Uni, the owner of this place used to hand flyers out from a plastic bag outside the Students’ Union. I never went but often thought I should’ve, just to see what it was like.

Watch a documentary on the Jazz Cafe here, and this made me chuckle! (Try not to be offended that it’s a *whisper* Sunderland forum…!

I’ve been asking for geordie jokes on twitter – if you have any and you’re on twitter please use #geordiejokes! My fave so far is the first from @walbaz_tpx : ‘Geordie from Walker buys a used car in Gateshead. On the way home he breaks down in clouds of steam on Byker bridge so he calls the AA. The woman on the phone asks “are you over heating”? “nah pet” he says, “I’m still in Byker man”

Detail of Yates Wine Lodge building

Beautiful building, previously featured here twice before: one and two. Very similar shots, two years apart, and I kinda said the same thing both times :)

Follow ‘em on twitter here.

Newcastle Central

The station has been featured here quite a few times before but I still like this simple shot of the portico.

Sorry it’s so late… one of those days.

The Forth Hotel

September 21, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne, Pubs, Bars and Hotels  |  8 Comments

I’ve hardly ever been in the Forth Hotel but whenever I have (usually before going to see a band at the O2!) I’ve enjoyed it. Should make my way down to that end of town again soon – there are some great pubs round the station. Of course it’d have to be in the daytime and not include very much alcohol…..! :)
