Steel Wheels

August 26, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  10 Comments

I’ve never really been into vinyl, except for a short period when I had a Bucks Fizz single that I loved. But if you are – or, for that matter, if you like your CD stores to be independent – then this is the place to go in Newcastle. Now relocated from Vine Lane to St Mary’s Place after the fire that preceded this pub!

I guess these are these bikes! I’d love to know how popular the scheme is so far.

August rain

I seem to remember that we’ve had a couple of nice days. But largely so far August has been all about the rain.

People waiting outside the station.

The Mile Castle

People sitting outside th Mile Castle at the corner of Grainger Street and Westgate Rd on Sunday last.

Incidentally I always thought it was ‘Three Mile Castle’. Even when I was taking the picture. No marks for observation for me!

Oh and the facebook page is up and running again… ‘like’ it for extra news and photos :)

Post Office

August 16, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  No Comments

I remember when I first moved to Newcastle for university in 1994 (!) standing outside the post office on St Mary’s Place, studying this chart and wondering how accurate it was – if you posted something to be delivered locally at 5.45pm would it really be delivered the next day? Would it really make that big a difference for items going further afield if you caught the 4pm post but not the 2pm one?

The chart is still there, but I suspect it hasn’t been accurate in quite some time – that it’s only there because it reminds the staff of a simpler time (… or because they’ve forgotten it’s there at all – and I suspect the latter). Especially as the Royal Mail only guarantee first class post within something like three days these days. But I guess it won’t be there for long now, as the post office on St Mary’s Place has now moved. It’s now round the corner in the back of M&M retail, the newsagent (roughly) opposite Pret a Manger on Northumberland Street. So there you go.

Incidentally, the only mention I could find of it online was this document. And the only reason I knew about it beforehand was because I saw a sign in there a few days before it shut, saying that ‘after consultation’ it had been decided to move it. Until I went off on maternity I was in there regularly and I never saw a thing :/

Haymarket refurbishment

August 15, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  1 Comment

I was thinking when I took this picture that it seemed like forever ago that the work started at Haymarket. And I was half right – it’s a very long time sine the roof was all packaged up to prevent roof panels falling, but only a lot more recently that it started up again after a winter break. (Does anyone remember when it started and finished before and after said winter break??)

The work isn’t finished obviously, but it’s already looking a lot better. Will post more pics once it’s done!

Oh – and Chris H, who first started this website back in 2006, has been in touch! I’ve updated the about Chris section with his current details – including an up to date email if you want to contact him.

Five Swans

Actually taken from the bus – going to get my hair cut a week or so before J was born! I haven’t been in yet but have heard it’s good – has anyone been in?

Thank you all for your welcome to J – he’s the most amazing, happy little baby and I’m so glad he’s here safely :)

Introducing the newest Geordie!

I don’t want his name google-able, but it’s J-a-c-k :)

Born at the end of June, a few days after his due date, safe and well. He’s now coming up six weeks old and the best baby ever :)

I hope to start posting again now but it might take me a little while to get back into the swing!
