This Elvis busker is on Northumberland Street quite a lot. He’s not bad!

Use our loos

Was going into Monument Mall the other day when I stopped to see if I’d really seen what I thought I’d seen, and I had. A sign saying ‘Use our loos’ and hilariously with two figures pressing their legs together. It made such a change from the signs you usually see of ‘Toilets are for customers only’ that I had to stop and take a picture.

Field of Jeans

This was the last thing I expected to see while walking past Northern Stage one evening. It’s called Field of Jeans, you can find out more information here and you can see another picture (not one of mine) here.

From the webpage:”FIELD OF JEANS: the Generation 3 art intervention further illustrates ideas behind the pioneering research project Catalytic Clothing, exploring and introducing the idea that everyday clothing and textiles can purify the air we breathe.”

Metro escalator

March 26, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  1 Comment

When I got off the metro at Haymarket and saw that the middle escalator was switched off, I was annoyed, because it’s not that long since they took the staircase away to make it *into* an escalator. And it seemed all a bit ridiculous to do all that work and then take it away.

But when I actually read the sign, it does seem quite sensible. It’s there when it’s needed (morning and evening rush hours) and switched off during the day when it’s quieter to save energy. Seems to make sense.

Emerson Building

Haven’t had a pic of this place for a while. You can also see the Monument Mall and Fenwicks buildings, as well as a bit of St James’ Park.

Get Carter – 40 years old

March 24, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  No Comments

This banner was outside the Tyneside Cinema last time I was passing (not sure if it’s still there as I haven’t been past again since!), celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of the film Get Carter.

The Guardian have an article about the anniversary here – I haven’t seen the film (am I supposed to admit that?!?) but as an inhabitant of Newcastle thought it made a good read.

I’ve posted pics of the Borough Theatre in Wallsend before. Unfortunately last time I was passing I discovered that it really is being demolished. Sad to see.

And a quiz reprise from Mike! His question is here and I’ve no idea what the answer is – anyone??

Signs of spring

March 22, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  1 Comment

I’ve just been away for the weekend and it seems now we’re back that spring is suddenly everywhere. But this is one of the first signs that I noticed, just last week. See the lilac crocuses underneath the sign?

First day of spring was yesterday. It’s about time.

Final quiz answer

March 21, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  12 Comments

The correct answer was given by Mike – this sign is on the corner of Warwick Street and Stratford Road. Sorry your comment went into the spam filter Mike, not sure how that happened! Dougbowski was close this time but not quite right – although the second part of his answer was correct.

I’ve written about these signs before on my blog and from that post I linked here – which gives more information about the art project they form part of. They’re now 16 years old, which is pretty impressive. There used to be seven signs but at least two have been lost. One day I’ll go search for the rest to see if they’re all still there.

Thanks for taking part in this quiz – I’m very impressed by your collective knowledge of Newcastle! Would you like another one soon?
