Two Picture Monday: Central Arcade

August 31, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  4 Comments

Two shots of the inside of Central Arcade in the city centre.  I love how quiet it is inside even though there are crowds and busses and lorries rumbling by outside.  Plus, it’s rather pretty.

While the cat is away, the mouse will play!  Beth is taking a well-deserved week off and that means I have an entire week to myself!  And i’ve decided to make it a special week and post TWO pictures everyday! So for the next seven days, there will be two pictures per post for you to enjoy!  Let’s all wish Beth a very happy week off!

Ouseburn Farm is situated under Byker Bridge in Ouseburn.

For some of the history about the farm and the valley click here.

I love these flags!

I’m going to have a week off next week, so I’ll leave you in the capable hands of Cassandra. Hope you enjoy looking at her pics, and see you all next week!

View from Starbucks

starbucks-flowersI was in Starbucks near Centrel Station the other day. Waiting for my drink, I looked out of the window, and this site greeted me. The sunshine, the flowers, the railings, the station opposite… I had to take a picture. What do you think?

Newcastle sunshine

August 28, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  3 Comments

The weather in Newcastle hasn’t been great over the last few weeks. This picture was taken at the beginning of August, when I was still holding onto the hope that we might have a decent month. Whenever there’s a sunny day you’ll find people sitting on the grass outside the Civic Centre. I’m usually rushing past, envying them.

New City Library view

This is one of the great views from the top floor of the Newcastle City Library. Definitely worth going up to the top for.

Newcastle United

It’s completely sad about the state of NUFC, but I remember the only match I had a chance to go to very fondly.  The Civic Centre can be seen at the top with the purple light.

Eldon Square extension

I should confess first that this picture was taken about a month ago. I’ve had quite some backlog of photos taken; I do try and keep them recent, but it’s difficult especially as I can’t get into town every day. So this area may have changed quite a bit since then.

When I first moved to Newcastle, there was a Safeways supermarket here, to one side of the Green Market – pictures here. I liked the Green Market, but it’s been closed for a couple of years now. The council say it’s just been relocated to High Friars, but I don’t like it there at all. It’s just not the same.

This is what it was knocked down for. A big Debenhams (currently the nearest one is South Shields or the Metro Centre) with lots more retail space.

As with Haymarket Hub, I can’t help but wonder whether there will be businesses to fill the waiting space. The world is very different now from how it was when these plans were drawn up. It would be horrible to see the lots lying empty.

St Peter’s Basin

August 24, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  3 Comments

This is taken at St Peter’s Basin, looking east towards the sea. I was amazed when D, my husband, took me down here. The usual views of the Tyne are those in Newcastle, with all the bridges, or the mouth of the river between North and South Shields. I had no idea this little world existed.

Tim of timmonet has some lovely pics and interesting discussion here, and the website for the Marina behind where I was standing to take this shot is here.

The Telegraph

telegraphI’ve saved my favourite until last. I don’t go there very often, but I can remember actually being in The Telegraph a couple of times in the last couple of years. That’s about as much as I’ve been anywhere I think… I do go regularly to the Union Rooms, but that’s just for convenience when meeting friends to go out for tea.

The roof terrace upstairs in the Telegraph is fantastic – do go and sit up there if you get a chance to on a sunny evening.

Crown Posada

The Crown Posada is another of those pubs I’ve only been into twice and never got round to going back to. It’s on Dean Street, before you get to the Quayside.
