Haymarket again

Another pic of the outside of Haymarket. Taken on Wednesday. The station isn’t finished yet, but it’s getting pretty close now.

Haymarket’s New Station

July 30, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  12 Comments

imgp4923jpgToday’s photo was taken by Nicole, my (Cassandra) roommate while I lived in Newcastle.  If you’ve got a moment, visit her writing blog!

The Haymarket scheme, led by private developer 42nd Street Hub, will see the station completely rebuilt with a new four-storey building above the concourse and improved passenger facilities at ground level and below.

Landmark steel arched trusses form the frame of the building.

Tolent Construction are currently building the project, due to be completed in late 2009, based on the design devised and developed by Newcastle architects Reid Jubb Brown Partnership working together with consulting engineers Arup and Metro’s own project and engineering staff.

Haymarket Sunset

July 29, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  12 Comments

Two sunsets taken in the Haymarket area.  The first one is new, and i’m pretty sure the second is a repost, but might be new as well.

(Edited by Beth to say that it’s just a nice coincidence to have two Haymarket shots in a row!)

(Edited by Cassandra to say that Beth should hot-foot it to Haymarket today and get a shot of the new station from the outside (if she doesn’t have one already) or I can post one that Nicole has if Beth doesn’t have a photo ready for tomorrow and we can make it a Haymarket theme week!)  :)

(Edited by Beth to say I’ve got a shot, I’ll put it up for tomorrow!)
Errrm, don’t mind us :)

Vandalism or art?

July 27, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  12 Comments

If you’re travelling to Newcastle by train from the south, you might well pass this, just before you cross the Tyne to enter Newcastle. I thought it would be interesting to post this after the recent debates about art/vandalism.

Where do you think it falls?

Sorry about the reflection. It’s difficult to get a perfect shot through a train window.

Two picture Sunday – All Saints Church

This deconsecrated church was visible on Monday’s shot. This shot is a little more detailed.

A few more pics on flickr.

The Strawberry

July 25, 2009  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  2 Comments

strawberryThe Strawberry has been featured here before. It’s a tiny pub just opposite the Newcastle United stadium and gets incredibly busy on match days. I didn’t know until googling just now that it has its own blog.

Platform 4, Central Station

I’ve never noticed this plaque before last Tuesday. It’s been there 9 years so that’s quite unobservant of me.

Don’t forget to email your photos to me at burningthepast at gmail dot com for Readers’ Photos week!

The Hotspur

I love this row of buildings. Again, it’s nearly always worth looking up in Newcastle.

I haven’t been in the Hotspur for years. Anyone know if it’s any good these days?

Edited to add: don’t forget about the Reader’s Photos week beginning 3 August! I’ve already received some fantastic photos, but there’s still room for more, so get them in quick….
